Novak Djokovic (N°1) et Andy Murray (N°2)

donnent le coup d’envoi de la saison sur terre battue.

Samedi 13 avril 2013 - C’est au cœur de la Principauté de Monaco, Place du Casino, qu’a été donné le coup d’envoi de la 107^e édition du Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters, avec un tirage au sort effectué par Rafael Nadal, le tenant du titre, dans la prestigieuse Salle Blanche du Casino, à l’occasion de la célébration des 150 ans de la Société des Bains de Mer. L’Espagnol s’est dit « sincèrement heureux de revenir ici ». « C’est un peu comme une seconde maison pour moi», a-t-il déclaré. L’Espagnol était entré dans l’histoire l’an dernier en devenant le premier joueur à remporter un même tournoi pour la huitième année consécutive. Il vise un nouveau record cette année avec une neuvième couronne au Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.

Peu avant le tirage au sort, Novak Djokovic, N°1, et Andy Murray, N 2, ont participé à une exhibition exceptionnelle de mini-tennis sur la Place du Casino.

Rafael Nadal, de retour après sept mois d’absence pour blessure au genou et déjà vainqueur de trois tournois cette saison (Sao Paulo, Acapulco et le BNP Paribas Masters 1000 d’Indian Wells), fait figure de favori. Il figure dans le bas du tableau, du côté d’Andy Murray. Ce qui ouvre la perspective d’un possible remake de la finale de 2012 entre l’octuple vainqueur et Novak Djokovic. Nadal affrontera au 1^er tour le vainqueur du match opposant son compatriote Fernando Verdasco (N°28) et l’Australien Marinko Matosevic (N°51). En quart de finales, il pourrait affronter le Serbe Janko Tipsarevic (N°9) ou le Français Gilles Simon (N°13), avant une possible demi-finale contre Andy Murray ou Jo-Wilfried Tsonga (N°8). Le Manceau, numéro un français entrera, lui, en lice face au Russe Nikolay Davydenko ou un qualifié. Et il pourrait, dès le 3e tour, croiser le chemin du Suisse, Stanislas Wawrinka (N°17).

Dans le haut du tableau, Novak Djokovic, qui semble remis de son entorse à la cheville droite, débutera le tournoi mercredi contre le Russe Mikhail Youzhny (N°31) ou l’Espagnol Daniel Gimeno-Traver (N°48). Il pourrait ensuite affronter l’imprévisible Letton Ernests Gulbis au 3^e tour avant un possible choc contre l’Argentin Juan Martin Del Potro (N°7) en quart de finales.

Dans le haut du tableau toujours, Richard Gasquet (N°10) pourrait débuter le tournoi face à un autre français, Benoît Paire (N°38). Il pourrait ensuite rencontrer, en quart de finales, le Tchèque Tomas Berdych (N°6) qu’il vient de battre récemment au tournoi de Miami. Le numéro deux français a donc une jolie carte à jouer. Plus compliqué, en revanche, pour Julien Benneteau (N°27) qui hérite dès le premier tour du jeune canadien Milos Raonic (N°16) pour une jolie affiche de début de tournoi. Enfin, Gaël Monfils, invité par le Tournoi monégasque, qui vient de renouer avec la compétition à Houston sous l’œil de son nouvel entraîneur Eric Winogradsky, aura affaire à un qualifié au premier tour.

The draw ceremony of the 107th Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters took place on Saturday the 13th in the prestigious « Salle Blanche » of Monaco Casino in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Société des Bains de Mer. The draw was done by the defending champion Rafael Nadal. The Spaniard said he was « sincerely happy to be back here ». « This place is like my second home », added Nadal. He made history last year when he became the first player of all times to win a tournament for the 8th time in a row. The 26 year-old champion has a staggering 44-1 event record at the Monte-Carlo Country Club, with his only defeat coming as a 16 year old on his tournament debut in 2003. This year, he bids to win the title again for the ninth year and set a new record at the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters.

Nadal, who was away from the ATP World Tour for seventh months due to a knee injury, has already claimed three clay titles (Sao Paulo, Acapulco and BNP Paribas Indian Wells Masters 1000) since his return in Vina del Mar (Chile) in February. He is seeded N°3 and could face Andy Murray in the semi-finals of the Monte-Carlo Rolex Masters. And then eventually Novak Djpkovic in what would be a remake of the 2012 final. But before that, he could face countryman Fernando Verdasco in the second round, should Verdasco overcome Australian Marinko Matosevic in his opener. The Spaniard is also seeded to meet either meet Janko Tipsarevic or No. 11 Gilles Simon in the quarter-finals. 

Second seed Murray heads up the bottom half of the draw and is bidding to reach the final of an ATP World Tour clay-court tournament for the first time. The Scot, who is coming off his 26th tour-level title in Miami, opens his campaign against either Robin Haase, a quarter-finalist this week in Casablanca, or a qualifier. Switzerland’s Wawrinka is a potential third-round opponent for Murray, with Almagro and Tsonga both possible quarter-final challenges.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic looks to have recovered from his right ankle injury in time to lead the 56-player field. The Serb practiced at the Monte-Carlo Country Club with his coach, Marian Vajda, for 50 minutes on Friday and took part in a fun exhibition with Murray outside the Hotel de Paris on Saturday. 

Djokovic begins his tournament on Wednesday against either Mikhail Youzhny or Daniel Gimeno-Traver. One of the most intriguing matches of the first round sees Ernests Gulbis face John Isner, with the winner a possible third-round opponent for Djokovic. Fifth seed Juan Martin del Potro is Djokovic’s projected quarter-final opponent.

Tomas Berdych is seeded fourth, following the withdrawal of recent Miami finalist David Ferrer due to injury. The Czech faces either Marcel Granollers or a qualifier in the second round and could meet Frenchman Richard Gasquet, a semi-finalist in 2005, in the quarter-finals. Interestingy, Berdych lost to Gasquet recently at the Miami Masters 1000.

Main draw play begins on Sunday, 14 April, at the Monte-Carlo Country Club.
